Constructing a traditional Irish roof! The medieval roundhouse build series is back until the roof is finished! In this episode, we will finish laying the scraws on the roof and light the first fire in the darkened roundhouse! We also dive into the history of sod roofs here in Ireland! Since the New Year, we have been regularly busy with the roundhouse project. The ways we have chosen are a lot of work, but also a good challenge! Enjoy!

Thanks a lot!
The sods will just form an underlayer on the medieval roof. So in the future, they should NOT have to shed any rain or get wet. Therefore the orientation in which they are laid (going bottom-up or top-down) shouldn't really matter. In the next episodes, the purpose of the scraw rolls will completely become clear! Thanks for watching and your great support! See you on the next one! Watch all other Roundhouse Episodes (playlist) here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0g1kSwASIt1rJeYNvlYqGuzQ2TakjBan
Make a porch for that house with the straw
That wheel bearing needs some lubrication.
I am surprised you did not layer the sod, from the bottom-up, rather than top down, then fill in the patches.
Still enjoying the video.
Great project guys! I really enjoy this serie and I am looking forward for the next episode. 🙂
Round outhouse sounds like a plan for the spare rolls. I also think that laying them horizontally might have been easier but not as good at shedding water. With vertical rows the water flows down without hitting a join where it might drip through, but with horizontal rows there are many points where it might hit and drip, hopefully you overlapped the layers to prevent this from being a big problem. I think this is the logic in laying them vertically though, the joins will never become a stop point for water as the sod decays.
Why didn't this show up in my notifications even though they are turned on?? Sometimes youtube is so frustrating.
I need a wagon wheel…
What flavour?
No…I need a wagon WHEEL!
Congrats on 200k subscribers!!!!
make a smithy with the rest.
Great video.
Who had thought that the roundhouse would be so awesome back when you guys were digging and hauling stones.
I was not able to truly understand the feel of this build until the translated reference was given 10:03
The smoke will kill all the grass. It will naturally die.
Thank you lads, back from festival and this was just what the witch doctor ordered! A visual and audible feast I can't wait to see the thatching and well done on finding a spare wheel! Only in Ireland! Don't mention the car!

Great video!
Can u tell me the music u used?
SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH gefixed jonge!!!
good honest hard work lads hell of a job well done
Have a nice day. Are there cobras
If you leave an open ring near the top of the roof cone smoke would vent out, can make a cone shaped lid that over hangs the cut out would protect from rain as well i think great vid!
First fire inside, will the roof catch on fire!?
Let’s goooo
Looks good to me fellas.
